can you use a 24ft pontoon boat 5-10 miles off the coast.?
I'm moving to the coast and looking to buy a boat. want a pontoon but not sure how they do off shore. a walkaround cuddy is a great fishing boat but not much seating for the family. i wanna take the family out 5-10 miles to the reef but also be able to go up into the rivers.
The US coast guard frowns on folks using craft not suitable for the condition. Pontoon boats are not rated for rough waters and are susceptible to wash-over in heavy seas. The coast guard will site you and force you back to the harbor. However the same will hold true of any large body of water, you take a big chance with what you want to do verses what you should do. Nut cases have taken kayaks out that far in fair seas, so why not the pontoon boat? I would think twice.
