Shuddering when moving from Park to Reverse?
I own a used 1997 SAAB with 140K miles. When I start the engine from a cold state first thing in the morning, foot on the brake, move auto trans lever from Park to Reverse, it starts to shudder and shake for a second or two before fully engaging. Does not seem to happen when engine/trans is even moderately warm. No other shifting problems.
Is it a failing transmission?
If so, is there any fluid additive that might delay a replacement?
Assuming the worst, can I replace it with a "junkyard" transmission instead of a rebuilt unit to save $$?
(It's an around-town runabout for my teenage daughter now, so probably only putting 5000 miles per year on it now).
Your advice would be appreciated.

To clarify....I'm not talking REALLY cold temperatures. Early Fall mornings...about 50 degF.
I would think that it's just a frost built up on the transmission.
Try refilling the transmission fluid with a different brand, and get an oil change. If these don't help then check your clutch and gearbox. It could be that something has worn down in your gearbox, and now when you switch to reverse it doesn't sit right straight away.
