I have a mercruiser 888 for a lower unit on a boat. How much gear oil does the lower unit take?
LISTEN,.... "DO YOURSELF A FAVOR" a thousand+ dollar favor:...
Since the lower and upper drive units are married and share the same oil, and they rely on it being and Staying full, and an upper unit can get smoked in a matter of a moment or two if the oil gets to low from a seal going out,.... add a autofill system by installing a plastic resivour and a hose though the hull (ABOVE THE WATER LINE) to the top of the upper unit Bearing cap... (you'll only need to drill and tap and install a 1/8th inch brass fitting)
this will prevent losing your upper unit pretty much forever.
FILL THE ENTIRE OUTDRIVE FROM THE BOTTOM UP, THEN ATTACH THE HOSE AND FILL THE RES.
